Mount Allison, UNB, and McGill earn victories

Mount Allison responds from opening day loss with 2-0 win

After dropping their opening game of the U SPORTS Men’s Soccer Championship 1-0 on Wednesday to the Calgary Dinos, the Mount Allison Mounties came out firing on Thursday and cruised to a 2-0 victory over the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

The Mounties struck early, with Diego Gutierrez-Soto scoring in just the 5th minute to give Mount Allison the early lead. Gutierrez-Soto’s goal came off an assist from Thomas Gallant.

The two teams would trade chances for much of the half with Saint Mary’s applying more and more pressure as the half wore on, but Mounties keeper Ethan Beaulieu-Richard stood tall, making three saves in the half to preserve the lead.

Mount Allison would take their 1-0 lead into the break, and they would come out in the second half looking to extend their lead.

Moussa Amaoutan would seal the victory for the Mounties in the 65th minute, scoring off an assist from Gutierrez-Soto to put Mount Allison up 2-0.

Beaulieu-Richard would finish the game with six saves for the Mounties, while Saint Mary’s keeper Matthew Rogers made five saves in the loss.

UNB Varsity Reds defeat host Cape Breton 3-1

In the second game of the day, the UNB Varsity Reds defeated the host Cape Breton Capers 3-1 at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex in Sydney, N.S.

The Capers came into the match with an impressive 14-1-1 regular season record, but it was the Varsity Reds who struck first, scoring in the 15th minute off the foot of Manny Machuca.

Cape Breton would tie the game in the 25th minute when Emmanuel Dossavi scored his first goal of the tournament, but UNB would retake the lead just five minutes later when Owen MacDonald scored to put the Varsity Reds up 2-1.

The Varsity Reds would add an insurance goal in the 86th minute when Christopher Lopez-Rey scored to put the game away.

UNB’s Kieran Baskett made two saves in the win, while Cape Breton’s Matthew Halvorson made five saves in the loss.

McGill downs Laval 2-1

In the final game of the day, the McGill Redmen defeated the Laval Rouge et Or 2-1 at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex in Sydney, N.S.

Laval opened the scoring in the 20th minute when Mamadi Camara scored his first goal of the tournament.

McGill would tie the game in the 35th minute when Antoine Coupland scored off an assist from Kieran Halliday.

The game would remain tied until the 75th minute when McGill’s Jean-Francios Bélisle scored the game-winning goal.

McGill’s Jonathan Sirois made three saves in the win, while Laval’s Alexis Langlois made four saves in the loss.

With the wins, Mount Allison, UNB, and McGill all improve to 1-1 in the tournament, while Saint Mary’s, Cape Breton, and Laval all fall to 0-2.

The tournament continues on Friday with three more games: Calgary vs. Laval, McGill vs. Saint Mary’s, and Mount Allison vs. Cape Breton.
