Ronaldo Misses Penalty as Al Nassr Eliminated from Saudi King's Cup
Al Nassr's hopes for Saudi King's Cup glory were dashed on Thursday evening as the team suffered a 3-1 defeat to Al Ittihad in the semi-finals.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr in January, missed a penalty in the second half with the score at 2-1, which could have drawn his side level.
Al Ittihad took the lead through Abderrazak Hamdallah in the first half, before Anderson Talisca equalized for Al Nassr just before the break.
Al Ittihad regained the lead through Muhannad Al-Shanqeeti early in the second half, and Ronaldo had the chance to level from the penalty spot after Talisca was fouled.
However, the Portuguese superstar's effort was saved by Al Ittihad goalkeeper Marcelo Grohe, and the home side sealed the victory with a late goal from Romarinho.
The defeat means that Al Nassr's hopes of winning their first major trophy since 2020 are over, and they will now turn their attention to the Saudi Pro League, where they are currently third.
Ronaldo's penalty miss was a rare blot on his copybook since joining Al Nassr
The Portuguese forward has scored eight goals in five league appearances for his new club, and has quickly become a fan favorite.
However, his penalty miss against Al Ittihad was a reminder that even the greatest players can have off nights.
It remains to be seen whether Ronaldo's penalty miss will have any long-term impact on his time at Al Nassr.
Al Nassr will be disappointed to have been eliminated from the Saudi King's Cup
The tournament is one of the most prestigious in Saudi Arabia, and Al Nassr were one of the favorites to win it this year.
However, they were outplayed by a determined Al Ittihad side and will now have to focus on the league.
Al Nassr are currently third in the Saudi Pro League, and they will be hoping to secure a top-two finish to qualify for next season's AFC Champions League.
Al Ittihad will now face Al Hilal in the Saudi King's Cup final
Al Hilal are the defending champions and will be looking to win the trophy for the third time in a row.
Al Ittihad will be hoping to cause an upset and win the trophy for the first time since 2018.
The final will be played on March 4th at the King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh.
