Pitt athletics: ACC Championships, strong finishes on the horizon
Men's soccer, volleyball, football, cross country ready to compete for conference titles
The Pitt Panthers have a number of teams preparing for ACC Championships in the coming weeks, while others look to finish the regular season strong and start the postseason on a high note.
Men's soccer (9-4-3, 4-2-2 ACC) clinched a spot in the ACC Tournament with a 2-1 win over Virginia Tech on Oct. 22. The Panthers are currently in fifth place in the ACC Coastal Division and will need to finish in the top four to earn a first-round bye in the tournament. Pitt will close out the regular season with games against Duke and North Carolina.
Volleyball (20-6, 11-3 ACC) is currently in second place in the ACC standings and has already clinched a spot in the ACC Tournament. The Panthers will look to finish the regular season strong and earn a high seed in the tournament. Pitt will close out the regular season with games against Notre Dame and Louisville.
Football (6-4, 3-3 ACC) is bowl eligible for the first time since 2019. The Panthers will look to finish the regular season strong and earn a spot in a quality bowl game. Pitt will close out the regular season with games against Virginia and Syracuse.
Cross country will compete in the ACC Championships on Oct. 28. The men's team is ranked No. 11 in the country and the women's team is ranked No. 21. Both teams will look to finish in the top half of the conference standings.
Other Pitt teams look to finish strong
In addition to the teams competing for ACC Championships, several other Pitt teams are looking to finish the regular season strong.
Women's soccer (10-6-2, 4-4-1 ACC) is currently in seventh place in the ACC standings. The Panthers will look to finish in the top six to earn a spot in the ACC Tournament. Pitt will close out the regular season with games against Boston College and Virginia Tech.
Field hockey (10-7, 3-5 ACC) is currently in eighth place in the ACC standings. The Panthers will look to finish in the top six to earn a spot in the ACC Tournament. Pitt will close out the regular season with games against Louisville and Duke.
Women's basketball will open the regular season on Nov. 7 against Robert Morris. The Panthers are looking to build on last season's success, when they finished 21-10 and reached the NCAA Tournament.
Men's basketball will open the regular season on Nov. 7 against The Citadel. The Panthers are looking to improve on last season's 11-21 record.
