Ha-seong Kim went 3-for-4 with a double and a two-run homer in the fifth inning to give the Padres a 5-2 lead.
The Cardinals scored two runs in the eighth inning on a single by Lars Nootbaar and a sacrifice fly by Brendan Donovan, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Padres' lead.
Nick Martinez (4-3) earned the win for the Padres, while Packy Naughton (2-2) took the loss for the Cardinals.
