Comedian Janey Godley is receiving end-of-life care at home after her daughter confirmed Godley’s cancer has progressed, putting her in the “final beats of her life.” Sharon, Godley’s daughter, shared the news on social media.
Sharon stated that her mother has been battling the illness since November 2022. She went on to say that Godley was “pretty zonked out,” but that she had “managed to squeeze her hand,” and reassure her that she would be with her until the end.
What is ovarian cancer?
Ovarian cancer starts in the ovaries and can spread to other parts of the body. Most often, it begins in the cells that cover the ovaries. This type of cancer is gynecologic, which means it pertains to a woman’s reproductive organs.
Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States. It is estimated that about 19,880 women will receive this diagnosis in 2023. Nearly 12,810 women will die of the disease.
Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer
The symptoms of ovarian cancer can be vague and hard to spot. In the early stages, most symptoms are gastrointestinal, which means they feel like issues that affect the digestive system. Some of these early symptoms of ovarian cancer include:
- Gas and bloating
- Feeling full quickly
- Abdominal pain and pressure
- Weight loss
- Frequent or urgent urination
It is important to remember that these symptoms can also be a sign of other conditions. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should see a doctor.
As ovarian cancer progresses, the symptoms may become more severe. These can include:
- Abdominal or pelvic pain
- Bloating
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Fatigue
- Back pain
- Leg pain
