Serie A | Fiorentina 2-2 Monza: Gosens seals thrilling comeback on debut
Fireworks at the Franchi as Grifo nets stoppage-time equalizer
Substitute Gosens completes stunning turnaround for Viola
Substitute Robin Gosens came off the bench to score a stoppage-time equalizer as Fiorentina came from two goals down to earn a thrilling 2-2 draw with Monza in Serie A on Sunday.
Monza had stunned the Stadio Artemio Franchi by racing into a 2-0 lead inside the opening 20 minutes, with Patrick Ciurria and Gianluca Caprari finding the net.
But Fiorentina never gave up and pulled a goal back through Christian Kouame just before half-time. Vincenzo Italiano's side continued to press in the second half and were rewarded when Gosens headed in from a corner in the 95th minute.
The result leaves Fiorentina in ninth place in the Serie A standings, while Monza are 14th.
Gosens the hero
Gosens has been a revelation since joining Fiorentina from Atalanta in January. The German wing-back has scored three goals in his first four Serie A appearances for the Viola and has quickly become a fan favorite.
His goal against Monza was a moment of magic. With the clock ticking down, Gosens rose highest to meet a corner and head the ball into the net.
It was a goal that sparked wild celebrations at the Franchi and will live long in the memory of Fiorentina fans.
A point earned
Fiorentina will be disappointed not to have taken all three points against Monza, but they will be relieved to have come away with a draw.
The Viola were second best for much of the first half, but they showed great character to fight back after the break.
The point keeps Fiorentina in the hunt for a place in Europe next season, and they will be hoping to build on this performance when they face Juventus next weekend.
