Bayer Leverkusen: Top Club will have B04 coach Alonso "as soon as possible"
The coaching issue at Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen is apparently about to be resolved.
According to media reports, Xabi Alonso is to take over as coach of the Werkself as early as next week.
As the "Bild" newspaper and the "kicker" reported on Monday, the 41-year-old Spaniard will sign a contract until 2024 and will be presented as the successor to Gerardo Seoane on Tuesday.
Alonso has been without a club since leaving Real Sociedad's second team in the summer. Previously, he had also worked as a youth coach at Real Madrid.
As a player, Alonso played for Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, among others, and won the Champions League twice with the Reds and once with the Spaniards.
Leverkusen are currently 17th in the Bundesliga table after eight matchdays and are under pressure to succeed.
Seoane had only taken over as coach at the start of the season, but was unable to turn things around after last season's third place finish.
Alonso is considered a promising coaching talent and is said to have impressed Leverkusen's management with his ideas.
It remains to be seen whether he can turn things around at the Werkself and lead the team back to the top of the league.
