Bayer Leverkusen snatch late draw against Stuttgart in Alonso's first Bundesliga game
Spanish manager earns first point in the Bundesliga after a dramatic 2-2 draw
Bayer Leverkusen fought back from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against VfB Stuttgart in Xabi Alonso's first game in charge of the Bundesliga club.
The former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder saw his side fall behind to goals from Serhou Guirassy and Chris Fuhrich in the first half.
However, Leverkusen rallied after the break and pulled a goal back through Moussa Diaby before Jeremie Frimpong equalised in the 89th minute.
The draw leaves Leverkusen in 14th place in the Bundesliga table, while Stuttgart are 16th.
Alonso makes a positive start
Alonso took over at Leverkusen earlier this month following the sacking of Gerardo Seoane.
The Spaniard has a wealth of experience as a player and coach, and he will be hoping to turn Leverkusen's season around.
Leverkusen have endured a difficult start to the campaign, winning just three of their opening 10 games.
However, Alonso will be encouraged by his team's performance against Stuttgart.
Leverkusen showed great character to come from behind and earn a point.
Alonso will now be hoping to build on this result and lead Leverkusen up the Bundesliga table.
Stuttgart rue missed chances
Stuttgart will be disappointed not to have taken all three points from the game.
The visitors were the better side in the first half and took a deserved lead through Guirassy.
Stuttgart doubled their advantage early in the second half when Fuhrich scored.
However, Stuttgart failed to make the most of their chances to extend their lead.
Leverkusen took advantage of Stuttgart's profligacy and pulled a goal back through Diaby.
Stuttgart were then punished for their missed chances when Frimpong equalised in the 89th minute.
The draw leaves Stuttgart in 16th place in the Bundesliga table.
Bruno Labbadia's side will need to start picking up more points if they want to avoid a relegation battle.
