Alonso is currently sixth in the drivers' standings, 10 points behind Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel.

The Brazilian Grand Prix takes place on Sunday at the Interlagos circuit.

Alonso's absence would be a blow to McLaren, who are fighting for fourth place in the constructors' championship with Racing Point.

Lando Norris would likely take Alonso's place in the car if he is unable to race.

Norris has impressed in his rookie season and has scored points in all but one of the races he has finished.

McLaren will be hoping that Alonso can recover in time to race in Brazil.
